Biophilic Design Trend

Biophilia (which means love of nature) focuses on people’s natural attraction to nature and its processes. Biophilic Design principles help to create human-centred environments that improve people's health and wellbeing.

Why is it important?

Recent research studies confirmed that incorporating direct and indirect elements of nature into interior spaces helps reduce stress, blood pressure, and heart rates. At the same time, it increases productivity, creativity, and focus.

Direct elements of Biophilic design are:

  • light

  • air

  • water

  • plants

  • animals

  • natural landscapes

  • ecosystems, and

  • weather

Examples of indirect experiences of this design trend are:

  • images of nature

  • natural materials used within the space

  • natural "nature" colours

  • simulation of natural light and air

  • naturalistic shapes and forms

  • natural geometries

What can be done to implement Biophilic Design into your office space?

These are some of the aspects that can be reviewed and modified in your existing workplace environment or brought into your new space:

  • improved natural and artificial lighting

  • adjusted thermal comfort level

  • designed spaces with a human focus

  • ventilation and air quality

  • acoustical comfort

  • views of nature (direct and indirect elements)

  • natural materials, textures and patterns

  • natural, pleasant colours
